British soldiers accused of crimes were given unfair trials and often acquitted, even when the evidence was strong. Colonists believed justice was impossible under British rule.

In 1768, two citizens of Annapolis were killed in a dispute with British soldiers. Despite strong evidence, the soldiers were acquitted. Colonists saw this as proof that British courts protected soldiers over civilians.
